Feline RAI (I131) Treatment

Treatment of cats for hyperthyroidism with Radioactive Iodine (I-131) is the preferred method of therapy. It is as easy as one injection just under the skin. I-131 is safe and effective. After the injection your cat will be required to stay at the treatment center for 2 to 14 days until the level of radiation is at an acceptable level. The length of stay depends on your state regulations and the amount of I-131 your cat is given.

The I-131 is absorbed quickly into the cat’s bloodstream and the diseased thyroid tissue sucks up as much radioactive iodine as it can hold. Once in the thyroid, the radioactive Beta particles admitted by the I131 destroy the overactive portions of the thyroid gland, leaving the regular healthy thyroid intact.

I-131 treatment has the following advantages over medical and surgical treatments for feline hyperthyroidism:

  • No anesthesia is used on your cat.
  • Your cat will not need to take daily medication.
  • It does not destroy healthy thyroid tissue.
  • It does not damage other tissue or organs.
  • It does not have harmful side effects for your cat.
  • Once your cat is done with the treatment, about one month after the injection, thyroid function returns to normal.
  • I131 therapy is cost effective
  • It has over a 95% successful rate
  • It is a CURE
